Soundtrack to the 80's
March 27th 2008 23:04
In the 80’s, movie soundtracks were big business.
The emotive sounds that accompanied your favourite film could be re-lived time and time again on the official soundtrack.
As we know; everything about the decade is already extremely nostalgic as it is, but nothing brings back those memories faster than your favourite 80’s movie soundtrack.
Many times however, the soundtrack turned out to be better than the film itself.
During the whole decade, soundtracks sold through the roof; the soundtrack to Dirty Dancing was so popular it spawned its own sequel. Hell even Patrick Swayze got a song on the DD Soundtrack (She’s like the Wind).
Top Gun had a similar old-school mixed with new-school playlist (as did many of the time) and these 2 albums sold more than any, bar one - Prince’s Purple Rain (see: Soundtracks better than their movie).
And Queen nearly had an entire album after scoring Highlander.
That’s just the way things were, hell, every rock band worth its two cents in the 80’s had an inspirational pump-up song for a montage or a sappy ballad; Eye of the Tiger sells truckloads of units to this day.
Even movie scores kicked butt in the 80’s. Star Wars, Superman, Rocky, Beverly Hills Cop and Back to the Future; where Huey Lewis also turned trumps with Back in Time and Power of Love.
I can’t possibly list all of them, but here are some the best movie soundtracks of the 80's

Working nine to five, what a way to make a living.
Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin'.
They just use your mind, and they never give you credit,
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it...
Okay, that was way easy. How about:
Let 'em say we're crazy! What do they know?
Put your arms around me baby, don't ever let go.
Watch the world around us, just fall apart.
Baby we can make it if we're heart to heart.
And we can build this dream together,
Standing strong forever, nothing's gonna stop us now...
Or:
When you get caught between the moon
and New York City,
I know it''s crazy, but it's true.
And if you get caught between the moon
and New York City,
The best that you can do
The best that you can do
The best that you can do
Is fall in love...
And no, I didn't have to look up the words.
How sad is that?
