Get real in the ring
Working as a journalist for a martial arts magazine, wrestling always becomes tricky ground. However, when I was a child, there was no middle ground. Wrestling was real, and chances are, I’d probably have a few title belts of my own when I was grown up. I already posted on 80s Wrestling HERE, but today we look at my 10 favourite Superstars of Wrestling from the golden age.
80s WRESTLERS
Hulk Hogan
He’s hated as much as he’s loved, but c’mon, he bodyslammed Andre the Giant! No one is as big as the Hulker in the wrestling world.
Andre the Giant
Possibly the greatest of them all. Undefeated for almost his entire career, the gentle giant (in real life) was one of the most loved wrestlers of all time. Legend.
The Ultimate Warrior
When I was a kid, I didn’t know anyone who didn’t love The Warrior, he was just too cool!
Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart
The Hitman was always one of my favourite wrestlers and is one of the most respected ever. He has been one of the most outspoken of the lot and his recent book My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling and his involvement in the famous Montreal Screwjob will keep his name alive forever.
Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage
Always seemed to be competing with the Hulkster for top billing. While his ability easily eclipsed the big man, his offbeat humour and personality didn’t seem to capture the world quite as much. You were usually either a Hulk OR a Macho guy. Oh yeah!
‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper
What a classic. Sometime a babyface (goodguy) and often a heel (badguy), Roddy Piper was one of the most colourful characters to hit the ring, and the only one brave enough to wrestle in a kilt.
Shawn ‘Heartbreak Kid’ Michaels
Back when Shawn really was a 'kid', and he was one part of The Rockers, he was a pretty cool character.
Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts
He was one of the most notorious heel’s and really fell from grace when it was documented in the Wrestling with Shadows documentary that he’d become a crack-head.
‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan
The dude was big, tough and cool...plus he walked around with a big piece of 2x4. Ho!
Ric ‘Nature Boy’ Flair
I hated the Nature Boy back in the day, couldn’t stand him. But as time went by he turned into one of the funniest characters in wrestling…wooo!
"To be that man, you've got to beat the man. Woooo!"

I have a funny story that's related to the biggest wristing star of the 80'd Hunl Hogan. A funny thing, well I think it's funny.
My husband and I breed schnauzers, a dog breed that originated in Germany. When we first decided to breed schnauzers, we had to think of a Kennel name, and we had to give three choices of Kennel name.
My husband was and still is a great fan of professional wrestling fan, especially back then, Hulk Hogan. This was in the mid 80's and Hulk Hogan's legions of fans were called Hulksters.
So, because we were Hulkschters, we thought we would Germanize Hulksters and call our kennel Holkschter Kennels (2nd choice). Sounds German, right? It was a joke, but 2nd choice is what we got, and now It's hard to remember where the name came from.
Unless we tell them no-one guesses the little joke we're having with our Holkschter Schnauzers running around all over Australia!

Now as for those iconic Aussie wrestlers from the 70's such as Spiros Arion, Mario Milano and Larry O'day - not to mention King Curtis and the Mighty Midgets - I guess that's a whole other post.
Cheers
