Akira

For a young white kid living in an 80s Western world, Akira was as weird as hell.
When I was told that there was this cool Japanese cartoon that was like an adult action movie with bikes and guns and other futuristic garb, and that it apparently looked close to real life, I was hooked in line and sinker.
What I saw on that screen was a little different than I had imagined, but…after dealing with the freaky weirdness of some of the stuff in the second-half, I still thought it was pretty damn cool.
I’ve seen the movie plenty of times since and when I was in highschool, I used to get stoned and watch it on a regular basis, but these days Jap anime is no big deal. They still don't make ‘em like that anymore though.
I used to think Kaneda was cool as hell, kind of like a tough Japanese Marty McFly; running around in his jacket and his sweet-as-hell bike.
I can still remember the opening scene where he walks down into a bar and the sign is kind of flickering – man, I thought that looked so real.
There have been several efforts to make a sequel or remake Akira and at the moment it seems that the studio has settled to make a two-part film, more closely following the original manga story. It was set to be released this year, but has already been pushed back to 2011.
Ironically, if they push it back anymore, it will be getting close to the original date the film was placed! (2019). Either way, if they do it well, it really could be a great film, but how often do they do it well?
