The Blues Brothers

On a mission from God
The Blues Brothers is certainly more of a 70s movie – however, for whatever reason it was released in 1980.
I have seen this movie more times than I can possibly recall. I own several editions and a couple of different soundtracks to go along with them.
It’s safe to say that I grew up with The Blues Brothers. Both my parents loved the film, and I’ve been watching it since I was young enough to pay attention.
While I wouldn’t say it is my favourite 80s movie – it is certainly my favourite musical ever – not that that is a big accomplishment.
Instead of being campy, pompous and theatrical like the typical fare – Blues Brothers is tough, gritty and cool.
Obviously then, the music plays a huge part in the film. Thankfully, instead of writing a bunch of new numbers ready for film, they chose to reach into a rich back catalogue of blues and soul.
Not everyone was thrilled by the ‘white-boys’ interpretations, but once the film re-established interest in blues-related music – everyone was more than happy to go along for the ride.
The saddest thing about the film is that is will be forever linked to the demise of the late John Belushi.
Blues Brothers was John’s vehicle, and upon release it was actually dubbed a huge flop. It wasn’t until much later that it amassed an enormous following and achieved its cult status of today.
Close friends have stated that there is little doubt that this led to Belushi’s depression and eventual death.
It does however, stand as a huge testament to the man. I mean this film has everything. – music, comedy, action, cameos and some of the best car chase’s put to film.
It was also the only time I have ever been convinced that Dan Ackroyd was cool.
This film is so quotable that it will require another post.
Blues Brothers 2000, however, will never be discussed.
'It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.'

I remember back in the day they used to have these big blues brothers nights in Chicago and everyone would come dressed up and they would play the movie.
