California Games

California love

Cali Games was easily one of the greatest console games to grace the 80s. It always seemed so cool that you got seven sports in one cartridge.

There were a few different versions, but the one I remember the best, and the most classic (though not most polished) was the original Sega Master System version.

california games surfing
It took pioneering games like Skate or Die and BMX Airmaster, as well as early hype for Xtreme games and rolled them into an awesome multiplayer package.

You got to pick your brand at the beginning, and although I always went Santa Cruz, it was pretty cool that they had Australian brand OZskates?
The BMX was awesome and the roller-skating (not in-line) was hard as hell.

Actually, most of the games were fairly hard until you got the hang of them.

california games skateboard
It had that cool hacky-sack event too (footbag) where you could hit the seagull if you were good enough. The game was full of little quirks and sound effects like that.
Before you started an event it would sound off surf/skate slang to get you pumped, with a horribly distorted voice pronouncing it – Hang ten!

Different things would happen when you wiped out in the surfing and everybody's favourite was when the shark came along and the jaws theme briefly played along with it.

They never managed to successfully sequel the game, but I could see it rocking along on a Wii with some killer multiplayer.

These days they would probably include some kind of surf/skate board controller – actually that is a killer idea, you heard it here first folks.

I LOVED California Games! It was the first and probably last game that I was addicted to. Hmm...maybe Alex Kidd was the last one. My favourite was the skateboard one while I never mastered the surfing.

p.s. I loved hitting that seagull, but my favourite was the rollerskating.

Remember with footbag one of the combos was the Axle Foley. A great 80's game referencing a great 80's movie
