Cocktail

In truth, this probably isn’t one of the best movies ever made, but it is an 80s classic.
Tom Cruise was riding his wave to mega-fame after Top Gun and could basically do no wrong in terms of box office gold.
Top Aussie export Bryan Brown co-stars alongside Cruise’s Flanagan as they try to reach their American dream of starting the McDonalds of cocktail bar franchises.
The film weaves in and out of different locations and after a lot of the famous cocktail-acrobatics, finds itself slowing down in Jamaica where Cruise comes face-to-face with Liz Shue. Obviously, love and heartache follow that leads up to the tragic finale...or something like that.
Although many don’t rate this film, it really did make a stamp on modern pop culture at the time. I remember not even being old enough to drink and we were throwing water bottles and primas around in class, trying to practice our cocktail making skills with flare.
The fake romanticness that the film portrays is hinted at by Flanagan's teacher in the beginning, but the end provides a much starker picture as Liz and Tom get married in his smoky old pub and then she announces that she is already pregnant with twins – what a start for those kids...classy. Only an 80s film could romanticise that.
The soundtrack had a stack of big songs from the past and present and shot to number one on the Aussie charts. It included 80s classics like Don’t Worry Be Happy, Addicted to Love and also launched the Beach Boys’ first hit in 22 years (a world record between hits) with the worldwide number one, Kokomo...ah, where is Kokomo exactly, anyway?
“I am the last barman poet, I see America drinking the fabulous cocktails I make, Americans getting stinky on something I stir or shake. The sex on the beach, the schnapps made from peach, the velvet hammer, the Alabama slammer. I make things with juice and froth – the pink squirrel, the three-toed sloth. I make drinks so sweet and snazzy, the iced tea, the kamakazi, the orgasm, the death spasm, the Singapore sling, the dingaling. America you've just been devoted to every flavour I got, but if you want to got loaded...why don't you just order a shot?”
