Cocoon
December 4th 2008 08:37
This week we are celebrating the superior acting talents and screen presence of one of the finest actors in the 80s – Steve Guttenberg, of course.
Today, we’ll look at Cocoon, another forgotten film of the time that was on TV every month back in the day.
It’s another comedy/drama/sci-fi, which was a winning formula back then, and truth be told, it was actually a pretty original idea.
Ron Howard stepped up and directed it and, amazingly, it even won 2 academy awards.
Could you imagine a light-hearted movie like this winning an Oscar these days?
The movie featured every geriatric actor that was kicking around at the time, including Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, who were husband and wife in real life and played a couple in several other films also – including the sequel and another 80s sci-fi/comedy classic Batteries Not Included.
Like any movie that did anything at the box office back then, a sequel followed almost immediately with Cocoon: The Return – in which they, ah, return...
Steve, who plays Jack...Bonner (that's right folks!) does another bang-up job in this and the sequel, and after hitting on some alien babe for most of the first film, he resigns himself to a young Courtney Cox. Stuff Steve.
I wouldn’t admit it to anyone, but I wouldn’t mind checking it out again – maybe I can catch it on a day-off before Oprah...shudder.
It had a pretty cool cover/poster too.
'If this is foreplay I'm a dead man!'

I had completely forgotten this movie.
I remember watching it with my mum when I was a kid. The pool in the retirement home got all charged from the alien cocoon's or something and they all became young.
I think there was even a famous scene where they are kind of floating around.
Cool flashback.

And back in fine form too might I add!
Cocoon has its high and lows, but they sure don't make them like that anymore, you're right about that.
