Australiana
When I took Scriptwriting at writing school, this movie was a major film that was severely looked down upon by the masses — well, by the loudest of them anyway. Most people felt that it was embarrassing to have this kind of film be Australia’s ‘Titanic’ etc and was an insult to the film making industry.
Well, I’m here to tell you that more than once I told them to go and shove it up their…artistic licences.
I unashamedly love this movie. While it is a bit exaggerated, it represents the Australia that I knew as a child. The language, the fashion, the style, the humour and the 80s buzz around Oz that the rest of the world was starting to tap into.
It was just before we really started to lose our own culture completely to the US and Europe. I still love it to this day and can’t help but get sucked in when I see it on the TV whenever it is shown.
Paul Hogan absolutely nails his character, and while he might not be the most natural actor in the world, he somehow manages to get over the line with his genuine attitude and relaxed demeanor.
Its not surprising to see that this is where he met his wife, as only a fool could miss their on-screen chemistry; Whether in cheeky confrontations, or when he swings in like Tarzan to save her from the croc or the legendary final scene in the subway as Linda runs her heart out to get there in time. Brilliant.
The first one is a fair whack better than the second, but that even has its own high points, as for the third? Well, I couldn’t tell you because, I haven't seen it.
Either way, its a truly iconic Australian film. I stick my finger up to those who stick their noses up at it.
"That's not a knife."
