80s Sk8ing

May 26th 2008 09:18
Christian Slater Gleaming the Cube

Rad, Slam, Jam, Thrashin’, Grind, Skill, Gnarly, Sketchy, Sick, Stoked;
This stuff was huge in the 80s.
Sk8ing had graduated from the Z Boys and moved into the bigtime after the early 80s slump.

Tony Hawk was already dominating and with Rodney Mullin and future Hollywood star Jason Lee bought the boards into the future.

We weren’t talking handstands anymore, we were launching into the ollie, the kickflip, and the heelflip.

Everyone had boards when I was a kid. Man I had a crappy one, but I did have one.
Before the times of the multi-million dollar council skatepark, people used to make their own.

The good ones became famous too.

80s skateboards
Street wasn’t so popular then, but ramps were huge. We didn’t really call ‘em vert ramps back then either, it was just half-pipes. I remember there was a legendary one down the road from me. (I think it was at the Clusker’s house in Campbells Creek? I dunno email me if you were there!) Anyway, it seemed huge at the time.

So were the actual boards. We’re talking grind rails, tail gaurds, nose gaurds, and decks as wide as the MCG and as heavy as Roseanne Barr circa ’88. Plus, who could forget the big-ass fluoro wheels and those terrible, terrible trucks.

Everyone was wearing the clothes and speaking the language, which started to veer away from its generic surfing roots. Who didn’t have some Visions Street Wear threads?

Some cool movies were being made too. Gleaming the Cube came out with Christian Slater, and Thrashin’ with Josh Brolin were sweet. And everyone wanted to ‘skitch’ after seeing Marty McFly ride the roads in Back To The Future.

There were even a couple of video games, Skate or Die and California Games anyone?

I was more into skating during the next generation style, but 80s Sk8 was such a cultural influence; it was hard not to like it.

'You mean to tell me that Mr. Studly is going to pass up a virgin ramp?'

The 80's had the flashiest cars of all time.
They were in the movies, on the TV, in video games, and in our dreams.

Gullwing doors, racing vents, targa tops, huge spoilers.

Yes, every over-the-top design was put into action.

EVERYONE had their favorite.
Was it a Ferrari Testarossa? The Back to the Future Delorean? KITT?

Heres a few gems:

80's Video Games

April 10th 2008 23:43
super mario bros.

The 80’s was the boom time for video gaming.

They’d slowly made their way from Tic-Tac-Toe and Pong super computers into the living rooms of our own homes.

Atari 2600
The Atari 2600 especially took the world by storm.
They offered an affordable machine that you could plug into your existing television set and play ‘ports’ of all your favourite arcade games right at home.

Atari 2600 Jnr.
Atari dominated the market with hit games like Pitfall, Breakout, Adventure, River Raid, Battlezone, and eventually the infamous E.T. cartridge – which led to the legendary Video Games Crash in ’83.

But out of the rubble, Nintendo managed to steal the video games crown title for itself.

Suddenly the world went Mario crazy; that little red and grey NES could be seen everywhere.

Man, it was so big they even had a whole movie about playing Nintendo – The Wizard (1989) staring The Wonder Years’ Kevin Savage. Although it was criticized as an advertising ploy by Nintendo, Universal actually paid big bucks for the licensing. And only the 80’s could use the real world unveiling of Mario 3 as a major plot point in a movie.

The Wizard
The movie grossed about 15 million....and Mario 3 grossed more than 500 Million!
Other notable NES (or Famicon in Japan) games were Zelda, Duckhunt, Castlevania, Rad Racer, TMNT, Bubble Bobble, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden & Aussie Rules Football (only in Aus of course).

Nintendo kept things interesting by releasing new equipment and accessories (most of which failed). The NES Zapper light gun was ahead of its time, and who could forget the Power Glove.

However, Nintendo came up trumps when they unveiled the 2nd bestselling (1st PS2) piece of video games hardware in history - the Gameboy.
Before Gameboy, handheld gaming was restricted to those little LCD games like Donkey Kong and Pac Man. Now people had an NES in the palm of their hands – well a black & white version anyway.

california games
But Gameboy was nothing without games. So Nintendo secured their next weapon from a small Russian developer for a tiny amount and unleashed Tetris onto the world. One of the most popular, and to some, most hated games of all time.
Sega Master System came in a distant second to the NES. Although arguably superior - California Games, Sonic the Hedgehog, Alex Kidd, Wonderboy and the Game Gear just couldn’t stand up to the marketing genius of Mario and his thugs – a problem that plagues Sega to this day.

Next time we’ll look at P.C., Arcade and more on the Video Games Crash of ’83...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

TMNT

Martial arts and Ninja mania swept the world during the 80’s due to the popularity of Kung Fu Theater and ninja movies (American Ninja etc.). The Karate Kid became a blockbuster hit film, and raised interest in the arts. The cartoon characters Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became a widely mass-marketed pop culture phenomenon in the late 1980s.

Eighties culture has slowly and surely made its way back into the mainstream conscience.

I remember seeing hints of its re-emergence back in 2000, but now it has turned into a fully-fledged reunion. The way things are going, it will probably last longer than the decade itself
