Family Ties
February 27th 2008 05:57
Family Ties creator Gary David has just released his tell all autobiography entitled Sit Ubu, Sit! (Thats right!)
To coincide with the release of the book, there was a small reunion of all the cast members on the Today show in the U.S.
It was great to see Michael J. Fox there in the middle. Although he had obvious trouble staying in his chair at times, he held up remarkably well. It was good to see that it wasn’t beneath him – he actually seemed pretty excited about the whole thing. He was very humble and appreciative of where he came from, and the gang was genuinely happy to be with each other.
M.J. made a good point in saying that shows don’t have theme songs anymore.
Too true.
Especially great, thoughtful tunes like the Family Ties opener.
He went on to explain how they don’t even have time for a song anymore. That song that you hear when you’re cleaning the kitchen and it makes you drop what you’re doing and run to the lounge.
(Who would run for the TV now anyway? If you miss anything you just download it, right?)
I’ve re-watched a few episodes of Ties lately, and while some do border on sappy and over-cheesy, there are some gems that still hold up well today; such as the episodes where Alex first meets Ellen. That Original on-screen chemistry has now lasted 20 years of marriage.
Pessimists would shrug off the show as un-realistic and fluffy. But would say we need more role models like the Keaton’s; and 20 years later, people still dream of a family just like that.
The Reunion
(Note: Alyssa Milano recently turned up for a Who’s The Boss reunion herself. Although she was also very humble, the show was a complete embarrassment - which took place on the Tony Danza Show. Ouch.)
(Sad note: Brian Bonsall who played Andy in the The Ties, has recently been convicted of assault, but luckily escaped a sentence. He got 2 years probation because he has recently finished a stint at rehab for alcoholism. Here is a picture of the once lovable and cute Andy.
That’s why he wasn’t on the reunion show. Another child star gets swallowed up by the Hollywood monster.)

Film & TV on DVD
I always got a kick out of the River Phoenix episode and some of the other guest stars were amusing too.
By the time the Mallory and Nick thing came into it the show was sliding but still a fun alternative to the Brady Bunch.
The first season gets released on DVD in Oz this month.
