The Gods Must Be Crazy

Coke of the Gods
I only remembered these movies existed about a week ago, and to my surprise, they just happened to pop-up during day-time television on the weekend.
While they are pretty funny, they didn’t really seem to be able to compete with the beach, so I only saw parts of them.
A part is all I had to see anyway, as the memories came flooding back from these bizarre, but classic comedies.
I still remember the movie posters for the second film being plastered everywhere in ‘89 – that classic shot of Lena Farugia’s legs dangling from the plane.
These movies were exactly for South Africa what Crocodile Dundee was Australia.
A few insights, a few stereotypes and a ton of un-politically correct fun.
Both films have interweaving stories. The second seems to do this better and funnier, but the original had the classic main story involving the ‘evil’ Coke bottle that was dropped from the Gods, creating strife and misery all around – hence, leading to the belief that the Gods, indeed, must be crazy.
N!xau, the lead role, was a genuine tribesman from the Kalahari Desert who really had only seen a few white men (awesome name btw – I am also working at getting an exclamation mark in my own name). He was discovered by director Jamie Uys, who cast him in the film.
N!xau didn’t have any knowledge of money, thus he was naturally exploited and received only a few hundred dollars for his work, which is said, that he literally just let blow away in the wind anyway.
However, true to his character, he got savvy real quick and by the time the second film rolled around he was demanding over half a million dollars! He got it too – nice. I guess that paid for his three wives that the desert-stud apparently had.
But, like most things to do with this franchise, it is hotly debated and hard to decipher. Even N!xau's real name and age is debated. Another little-known fact is that there are at least three other obscure sequels that were made in Hong Kong – two of them starred N!xau again in his re-occurring role and a couple both claim to be Gods Must Be Crazy IV?? The gods aren't the only ones that are crazy...
"He spoke so earnestly that the baboon began to take note and dropped the evil thing. He said, that is a very wise thing you have done."
