Good Morning, Vietnam

This is one of those films that was really big back in the day, but the sands of time have pretty much swallowed it up.
I still vividly remember the commercials with Robin Williams screaming “Good morning, Vietnam!” before breaking into James Brown’s I Feel Good.
Williams was at the top of his game by this stage and although his radio bits seem a little forced on recent playback, once it gets rolling, this movie still holds up really well.
In essence it is a small character story, which is actually set in the very early days of the Vietnam War. The story really takes hold once Williams takes to teaching English at a community class while trying to chase a local Vietnamese girl. He ends up befriending her brother and it soon turns into a complicated friendship.
Forrest Whitaker does a typical bang-up job as Williams’ sidekick, but the music really plays a lead character too, with every hit and miss song that was popular during the period being included.
There is a great little scene when WIlliams' character is wanting to leave, but runs into a bunch of troops out on the road, where after a little encouragement, he goes into his act for them. It is here where he realises how important his job is.
The whole script was based on a true story and because I recently read the epic Vietnam novel Fields of Fire (which was written well before this film), in which there are various references to their radio's screeching “Goodmorning, Vietnam!”, it added a little weight in credibility.
What might be not so credible, but still plausible, is a possible future sequel that Robins has said he has been interested in for some time…with the rate of 80s remakes and sequels hitting the screens, I would not be surprised.
"Goooooooood morning, Vietnam! Hey, this is not a test! This is rock and roll! Time to rock it from the Delta to the D.M.Z.!"
