Focus, Daniel-san! Karate Kid

February 28th 2008 03:27

Karate was huge in the 80’s.

I was one of a million kids who decided to take up lessons after seeing Daniel-san single handedly kick the crap out of Cobra Kai back in ’85.

I’ve gone back to karate several times over the years, and although it has lost a lot of its practical respect in the martial arts world and has fallen to trends like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing, it still holds a special place in my heart.

Karate was only ever half about fighting. It was about being wise like Mr Miyagi – or Master Splinter, once the Ninja Turtles strolled in.

It was about honor and respect.

With the exception of Chuck Norris, who has reached cult status, all of the karate heroes have been long forgotten.

However, every time I visit my young nephews they race over to give me a roundhouse in the shin, or a good uppercut to my gut. I know there is still life left in the 2000 year old sport.
TMNT has made a more than modest comeback, and apparently has led to renewed interest in The Kid.

It puts my mind at ease when I know the next generation will know how to wax the car.

(Note: For all the long-time fans of The Kid, you must check out No More Kings’ music video to their song ‘Sweep the Leg’ (SEE BELOW) It’s said to be "the Citizen Kane of online comedy videos". The video is a humorous reunion of the 1984 film, and features the entire original male cast except for the late Pat Morita, who portrayed Mr. Miyagi in the film.)

‘Put him in a body bag Johnny, yeah!’

I don't know much about karate, other than that it is clever, but I guess I can understand the fascination guys have with it.

You did start with a good score, didn't you?

Ah yes I do remember "The Karate Kid" quite fondly. In fact I have thm on DVD. Shame it doesn't include "The Next Karate Kid".

I never did take up Karate myself but ended up doing Tae Kwon Do.

What about "Monkey" anyone? I do rememb er that I used to have his stick and I used to treasure it to death.

Hey, we have to keep reminding ourselves that the 80's weren't all that bad - for every Culture Club there was always a Karate Kid!

Great and barmy video.
The Karate Kid I was one of the favourite movies round our house for years; the two sequels weren't quite up to the standard but they still had their moments.

this movie, when you're a kid, is awesome. After I saw it, I had to paint a fence, convincing myself that I was training for karate...

Great stuff.
They sure dont make em like that anymore.

I started karate after watching this movie back in the day, and now I teach it!
Every boy should have to watch this movie.

Jarrah,

I can remember waiting - what seemed like - an eternity for the sequal ... which really blew me away: every bit as good as the original... even part 3 didn't loose it's charm for me.

Good call, another classic 80's memory to leave a warm fuzzy feeling.

I love this movie SO much that when I found it in the $5 movie bin at Walmart a few weeks ago, I just HAD to snatch it! My sister and I had such a crush on "Daniel-san", but my sister was worse and more sickening than me, LoL.

I love that music video!!!

I remember having one of those same miniature drum thingies that was used in Karate Kid II to get Daniel-san to focus - or something along those lines.

I heard a while back that they were considering a re-make of Karate Kid...with Jackie Chan as Mr. Miyagi...
