Off with the fairy's
If I told you that there was a film starring Tom Cruise called Legend, you could be forgiven in thinking that it was autobiographical…
However, those who can barely remember this little movie will recall it well.
It was always a strange project for Ridley Scott and although people seemed to eat up fantasy themed adventures in the 80s, this one mostly crashed and fell. It has since earned itself a cult following in several different versions.
The most notable version difference is the two separate soundtracks. The American version had a replaced track from the original orchestral score to a more modern 80s electronic style, mainly done by Tangerine Dream I believe.
The version I recently watched again featured the original score and the original longer running time.
Although an 80s electronica score would be distracting, I certainly found the orchestral sounds to be a little over the top as well.
Anyway…to the movie. Tim Curry is easily the best thing in this, playing the dark one himself. An amazing costume and make-up job really help his acing stand-out in a film that has little else.
Its pretty funny to watch Tom Cruise run around as some kind of forest child with his goblin and fairy mates, off to rescue the awesome Mia Sara – Simone from Ferris Bueller (Ferris Bueller post).
There’s little I can say about this film, I tried to like it some, but it is puzzling to imagine Scott actually making this. It probably isn’t as bad as some say, but there is little good about it either. Doesn’t quite have the story of the Dark Crystal and doesn’t have the acting and adventure of Willow, and doesn't come close to either in entertainment.
Worth watching for the puzzlement and questions it raises. What were they thinking?
