Married...with Children

Love and marriage

Ahh, the Bundy’s. A model family for every thriving family in the western world.

Some say it was the bottom of the heap for a huge piling mess of 80s crap that built up in the later decade, or some say it was pure white trash brilliance.

Although it did have plenty of low points, it was, at times, still pretty damn funny. It was so risqué and groundbreaking for the time that I’m surprised we could even watch it really.
In retrospect, it really paved the way for modern prime-time shows that seem to screen every day of the week like Three and a Half Men.

I’d say that most of my favourite episodes involved Al Bundy kickin’ ass and taking names, those few fine moments when he seemed to be winning against the constant onslaught of pessimism.

My particular favourite was when Al suddenly became the stud of the neighbourhood and every chick on the block wanted him to wash their car with his gear off, then it all came full circle when we saw him ‘morph’ back into his old self once his spirit had been crushed.

Or the famous rights of passage episode where Al takes Bud to the ‘nudie bar’ on his birthday and they start a brawl and sing the ‘nudie bar song’. Yes, we’re talking high-brow stuff here people.

But that's exactly what the producers had in mind. Much like Roseanne (Roseanne post), but taken to the goofball limits, Married with Children was a lash-back toward the perfect family life portrayed in shows like Cosby, Family Ties (Family Ties post) and Full House (Full House post).

Besides, it also served as a launching pad for Christina Applegate (Kelly) who went on to make such early 90s classics like Don't Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead...

One of the best characters, apart from Buck the dog, was Marcie’s playboy hang-around, Jefferson – legend. From time to time I see him in something else and it just cracks me up thinking about his old days.

But the show mainly revolved around Al and his efforts at the shoe store, his club NO Ma'am!, and his memories of Polk High football...

I own a few seasons of this, I think they were twenty bucks each or something. I only have the seasons when Jefferson's in it though, even though it still wasn't the greatest show it really was a lot better when he was in it...
