Van Halen

Eddie Van Halen was the king of 80's guitar.
Every two-bit hairmetal and rock band copped his style down to a fine art, hell even pop and rap took hold of his techniques.

Around the the time of their album MCMLXXXIV (1984) he was on top of the world. Everyone in the business wanted a piece of Eddie's two-finger tapping technique.
Even Micheal Jackson called Ed up for the huge solo spot on Beat It.

"I remember I came in and did two passes, I think they made the solo from bits off both - Michael came in and goes (Eddie does high-pitched Michael Jackson impression) 'I like it when he does that really high, fast stuff!' - ha ha ha!"

Eddie Van Halen
Their 1984 album went huge, but then the unthinkable happened and David Lee Roth, who was the proto-typical frontman of the 80s himself, quit/fired from Van Halen.

Everyone figured it was over now, but for the first time in history, one of the biggest bands in the world replaced its lead singer...and got even bigger!

The world went Van Hagar mad as the band came out with a more pop-friendly edge on tracks such as Dreams, Why Can't This Be Love and Love Walks In.

The rest is history.

Fast forward to now and the dreams of millions have come true and Dave is back in the band.
The U.S. tour grossed more than any of their previous tours ever did, and despite calls from every magazine and critic in the world saying it wouldn't last the distance, it looks as if the band is about to embark on the U.K., Australia (fingers crossed) and Japan.

I will be there, as all rock fans should.

Personally, I'm waiting for a new album, and despite those same critics opinion - I think it will be killer!

The later VH albums had deep and thoughtful song writing and Eddie has mastered the piano like he did the guitar, plus Dave is singing better than he even did before.

Bring it on.

I get up, and nothing gets me down...
You've got to roll with the punches to get to whats real...
Oh cant you see what I mean?
Might as well jump

Exactly!

Eddie and the Cruisers

Eddie and the Cruisers

Eddie and the Cruisers is a very uneven movie.

Great concept - bad plot holes.
Good actors - bad dialogue.
Good music - even better lip-syncing.

Eddie was the man, and its funny that Michael Paré never really went on to do anything else, I guess Eddie & the Cruisers 2 probably sealed his fate

The most popular thing about the movie was actually its soundtrack.
It even acted as the fictional full Eddie and the Cruisers debut L.P Tender Years (with one song from their never released album Season in Hell)

Its impressive the way they managed to construct the songs sounding like the 60's, yet with a modern edge; which is why the Cruisers were theoretically big again in the 80's (in the movie that is).
John Cafferty and his band performed the whole album, and managed a sequel themselves with the next movie.

The weirdest part of the movie is in the final breakdown when they find the tapes and we have to see if Eddie is really the guy in the car. Its so dramatic and the music score sounds like a horror/thriller movie, for 10 minutes or so it was like a separate movie!

However the final conclusion is great and the new song we get to hear is pretty cool too.

A cool Eddie & the Cruisers 'Season in Hell' trailer

Bobby Brown

Bobby Brown

Bobby Brown was so cool he pioneered a whole new genre of music.

It didn’t last all that long, but New Jack Swing was pretty big in the late 80s, early 90s.

Bobby had a string of hits which were bought on by the genre bending, hit-single Every Little Step.

Yes, before he was drink-driving, smoking crack and bashing Whitney Houston, he was bustin’ out his funky dance moves that spawned a thousand clones.

Bobby Brown
Guys like The Fresh Prince (Yes, Will Smith), MC Hammer, Soul 2 Soul, Wrecks-N-Effect (Rump Shaker), Partners in Kryme (Turtle Power) and even Michael Jackson went ‘New Jack Swing’, and white dudes went swing with New Kids on the Block.

Whitney Houston even tried it out for herself, which is probably why she pimped Bobby out in the first place (‘cause it definitely wasn’t his fugly ghetto face).

I love Bobby’s song from Ghostbusters II (On Our Own) as the boys are busting down some bad ass ghost slime.

I remember every kid in the playground with Bobby Brown/MC Hammer happy-pants trying to bust out the latest Ice-T Breakin’ moves like it was yesterday.

Bobby toughened it up a bit with Humpin’ Around, but he couldn’t take the backlash of the 90s and gangster rap, especially seeing as he was face down in a pile of coke most of the time.

The Bobby Brown Autobiography is due out soon, so I'm sure we'll hear all the lurid details.

But it’s hard to believe he was such a bad boy, when you see him in a clip like this....
Classic.
