The NeverEnding Story

The mirror of your dreams
There were a handful of movies they used to play in school sometimes when it was a rainy day. We had this cool psychedelic film The Phantom Tollbooth, and the Aussie classic Dot and the Kangaroo. We also had The NeverEnding Story, which goes without saying, was my favourite pick.
There was something just so epic and adventurous about this film that other kids’ movies just didn’t seem to bring.
While Bastian deals with his troubles back in Canada, Atreyu is roving across the countryside, meeting death in the face and flying around on his awesome luckdragon, Falkor...which was probably the coolest thing about the film – who didn’t want their own luckdragon when they were a kid?
There was a host of crazy-ass characters and at times it was scary as hell for a youngster. I remember the tension escalating so well as the shutters smash and crash and the lightning strikes while Bastian continues to read the old book.
It’s actually a German film derived from the novel of the same name and at the time it was the most expensive movie made outside the U.S.
The English version also had the 80s pop sensationalism of the one-hit-wonder The Never Ending Story song, complete with its New Wave synth-pop, that apparently was completely absent from the original German version, which had an epic orchestrated score and soundtrack.
They made a sequel to the original that was woeful and a sequel to that one too, which I can only assume was even more woeful.
And, yes, this film is set to be remade in the near future by Warner Bros.
“Having a luckdragon with you is the only way to go on a quest.”

I saw it again recently and was happy to see that it aged well.
You are correct about the sequels.. They sucked.

Though I slightly disagree with Damo, it has aged and not necessarily well but...you overlook that because it rocks!
I always cried when there was one piece of Fantasia left but, loved it at the end when he and Falkor fly over the bullies...
Oh the memories...
By the way there was another wet weather movie at my school....
