Over the Top

Winner takes all
Let’s just put this out there – Sly Stallone is one hell of a film maker and actor, I mean, top notch, the guy is a beast. How could anyone be both beautifully articulate in his acting, but then be so great on paper as well?
He does his brilliant best here again with both acting and writing duties.
Sly was on such a huge hot-streak in the 80s that the crazy-ass son of gun thought he could re-write Rocky a couple of times and no one would know.
Fortunately, I love Rocky (Rocky post) and I also dabbled in becoming a world circuit arm wrestler when I was about nine, so this film really struck a chord with me.
The number one thing I took away from this movie though, and probably what most men did, is that when you go in for the arm wrestle, there is two important techniques that will guarantee your success.
The first is to switch your cap from the front position to the back when you’re going into the clinch (aero dynamics is extremely important in arm wrestling).
Secondly, when it looks like you’re going to lose, change your hand grip into the special trademark Hawk-style emergency position, and you will receive your special power-up burst, ensuring victory – works every time, if this documentary is anything to go by.
Even among this bizarre back-drop, the film does turn out to be a great little father/son story and I know for a fact that it is near the top of my wife’s ‘guilty pleasures’ list. She will fight you to prove the relevance and quality of this film.
