Predator

'She says the jungle... it just came alive and took him.'
Ah yes. This was Arnie at his best.
More memorable lines than Ferris Bueller, more action than Lethal Weapon and about the coolest alien creature ever made. Predator had it all and turned out to be the runaway hit of '87, only second to Beverly Hills Cop.
They never were able to make it cool again though. Don't get me wrong, the Predator is my boy, he's one of my favorite actors - but the second one blow'd, and although the first AVP was fairly decent for a B-grade budget sci-fi, the 2nd one had a huge budget and was about the worst film I have ever seen at the cinema.
The original It had some of the best effects ever put to film. It still looks cool when the Predator goes swinging through the jungle with his cloaking camo on. Even better were the sound effects. That cool ticking sound, the stuttering repetitions, his sighting system and the shick his blades made; plus the cool laser blasting - especially when he was cutting down half the jungle looking for Arnie at the end.
But Arnie outsmarted his heat-vision with a bit of guerrilla-style mud.
That has to be one of the best final 20 minutes in any 80's action flick. The hunter becomes the hunted. Awesome. That was actually the original name of the film - Hunter. And Jean-Claude Van Damme was to play the alien - but you can look that up yourself.
Somehow, this was always the kind of sci-fi action movie the chicks could did. I remember my Mum always thought it was pretty cool, and my Mrs loves it too.
We were watching it not long ago and I was telling her about the bit where Carl 'Apollo Creed' Weathers gets his arm shot off but you can see his arm tied behind his back. I was saying we always used to laugh at that back in the hood.
Well...we were watching, and we didn't see no Apollo Creed arm.
Didn't I look like a deutsch bag. Then the fiance started going on about me having another acid flashback again...
After a while I convinced myself I wasn't being confused by a past LSD experience and I put all of my investigative journalism skills into action.
Well...turns out I was dead right. So right in fact that the filmmakers took the time to take it out of the DVD version because it was so freakin' obvious that Apollo Creed didn't lose an arm!
Anyway, its a sweet film. Arnie, Apollo Creed, Jesse 'The Body' Ventura...and the dude that played Harry in Harry and The Henderson's...there's another 80's blog...

You're right about the one liners too: "I ain't got time to bleed", "If it bleeds we can kill it", "Get to the Chopper", "You're one ugly motherfucker". Fantastic stuff
And just the way that the two ultimate hunters show down at the end. Man I love Predator.

Film & TV on DVD
I think Im the only who prefered the sequel to the somewhat flat original. McTiernan handles the action well but the whole thing falls apart for me in the oiled Arnie finale. A very pedestrian actioner IMo, the sequel wasnt much better but managed to be edgier and have some fun geekboy moments.

"Billy, you ain't afraid of no man"
"That ain't no man out there...we're all gonna die"
And his sacrificial martyr move with the dramatic slashing of his chest, with fake hollywood blood, as he offers himself to the beast.
YOU COULD SEE CARL'S ARM!
We used to rewind that shootin' scene then pause it so we could have a good laugh, also.
Maybe the version you saw had it edited out.
"...and dumped the six of us in a meat-grinder" Another classic Arnie line.
I have seen the movie about a dozen times and I'd watch it again at this very moment.
What's wrong with me, JL? Do I need help?

Back to the Eighties
I guess you need help all 'round...although, you're probably beyond help...
