Rain Man

D...d...definitely raining
Before Tom cruise turned into an absolute nutter, he was regarded as a fairly decent actor…well, he had charisma anyway. Even better though was Dustin Hoffman.
So when you grab both of these guys in the peak of their acting careers and throw them together, you’d probably expect an Oscar or something, and that's exactly what they got.
I think Rain Man is one of those movies that has actually held up pretty well over the years. It was a good idea with some great dialogue, plot points and comedy. Sure, sometimes Cruise can be a jerk, but he’s supposed to. And things are tidy by the end, but it is by no means a super-happy ending.
Obviously though, the whole things pivots off Hoffman’s awesome acting and delivery as Rain Man. At the airport, in the car or on the casino flaw, he delivers classic line after line. To this very day I still annoy the hell out of my Mrs with the continuous stuttering line d...d…d…definitely…definitely… she’s so immune to it that I usually drive myself crazy before it even bugs her.
Hoffman also had a huge influence on the movie, like re-casting himself as Ray, when he was actually hired to play Charlie (Tom’s role), he also fought for the end, where the producers wanted the super-happy ending and many other character changes etc.
Ray also did a great bit of PR work for QANTAS with his now-classic refusal to fly with anyone else – “Oh that's gonna do me a lot of good because QANTAS doesn't fly to Los Angeles out of Cincinnati, you have to get to Melbourne! We have to go to Melbourne, Australia in order to get the plane that flies to Los Angeles!”

I saw this doco (SBS or ABC, can't remember] about the real Rain Man. That was pretty interesting. He got invited onto the set while the film was being made.
Then in Part 2 of the doco this other rain man type went to Iceland and apparently it's the hardest language to learn on earth. After two weeks he got interviewed on TV and spoke perfect Icelandish.
These blokes are freaks. They should all be blogging on Orble.
