Johnny 5 is alive!
And so is this blog again...finally.
I had to go back to the future and, you know – make a living.
Anyway – Short Circuit.
I’d almost forgotten about this movie until someone mentioned it the other day.
I remember watching it many times as a kid and I’m pretty sure we had it on VHS. I think I watched the 2nd one again a few years ago with Mick Bradley when he worked at Video Ezy.
The 80s was sci-fi and robot crazy, so this was an easy hit for the market. Apparently they wrote a script for a third edition, then re-wrote it and eventually scraped it just before production.
Oddly enough, the dudes who made Spy Kids have secured the rights and are remaking the original – which will be amusing when the film comes out because kids will think that Johnny looks like Wall-E, but we all know who rocked up on the scene first. Andrew Stanton actually admitted he may have been subconsciously influenced by Johnny 5 when designing Wal-E. Duh.
One of Back to the Eighties favorite's – Steve Guttenberg – stars in the first film, and alongside him in the villain role was George W. Bailey, who ironically played Harris alongside Guttenberg in Police Academy. Steve didn’t return for the 2nd, which is surprising, given his knack for sequels...
Short Circuit was one of those cool 80s adventure/dramas that was made for kids but had plenty of adult drama and themes – the kind they definitely don’t make anymore.
Here’s to Johnny – a real classic.
We’ll talk about more of Steve Guttenberg’s classic films next time...
'Oscar, you will not get away! This time I am really pissed off!'
