Star Trek: The Next Generation

May 24th 2009 23:00

Ongoing mission

Amid all of the fanfare of the new movie I thought it was time to go back and look at Star Trek in the 80s.

I have never been a ‘Trekkie’ or ‘Trekker’ or whatever the hell you guys call yourselves, but I have had a look here and there and I used to watch TNG on a fairly regular basis back in the day.

On recent re-watch, it probably isn’t quite as good as people once proclaimed, but it is decent for its age. As the wise philosopher Wayne Campbell of Wayne’s World once noted, “In many way it's superior, but will never be as recognised as the original.”

The acting, for one, is vastly superior, with Patrick Stewart heading up Captain duties for the Enterprise this time around. I was always a Riker guy myself though, and I know my wife and many others can’t go past super-android Data as their fav. Other regular bigshots were Geordi with his futuristic, but now looking so dated, visor, mind-reading Councillor Troi or probably my early favourite Lt Worf.

Its safe to say that Wesley Crusher (Will Weaton) was no ones fav…

Now and then it manages to slip back to the cheesy, camp leanings of the original series, especially in the terrible first season, but in all it can be a pretty dynamic and character driven show.

One the best additions to the Enterprise was the ‘Holodeck’, where you could simulate almost any scene and situation. It often turned into a notorious repeating story-arc whenever it broke down, which was often.

I thought that thing was the coolest bit of technology never made, similar to the video game ‘Better than Life’ from Red Dwarf.

Even though I have always been a Star Wars man, I have to admit that Picard and the crew know how to throw together a decent hour worth of galactic intrigue.

"Make it so."

Star Trek TNG caught my eye as I've never thought of it as an 80's show. I checked out IMDB and found these release dates.
USA 26 September 1987
Australia 2 November 1991
Back to the Future was right, the 80's is all relative.
How the web has changed things, another reason we'll never have an era like 80's/early 90's again.
