80’s Blog: ‘We’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’

February 26th 2008 10:44
Eighties culture has slowly and surely made its way back into the mainstream conscience.

I remember seeing hints of its re-emergence back in 2000, but now it has turned into a fully-fledged reunion. The way things are going, it will probably last longer than the decade itself.

Understandably, some have already had enough of the 80’s re-surge, and well, some probably had enough the first time around.
But what did the 80’s have that we don’t have today anyway?

That loving feeling....

You know what I mean. Where’s the goosebumps? Where’s the passion and inspiration gone?

I know it all sounds a little cheesy, but hey, that’s the 80’s.

In the 80’s it seemed like anything was possible. Like there was hope. Not the kind of hope they tried to cultivate in the 60’s, but more of a heroic romance that seemed to lace the air.

If you worked hard enough you could become a multi-millionaire executive overnight. If you trained long enough you could become the heavyweight world champ. And if you ran to the airport fast enough, you could walk away with the love of your life.

You could be the hero.

Now?

Now the hero always dies. Then the forensic teams come in and dissect every grotesque inch of their dead carcass for our morbid amusement.
If you aspire to be a forensic scientist and hack through rotting corpses for a living, thats your choice.....

Me?
I’m a Goonie.
I want real adventure.

But baby, baby I know it...’

I love the Goonies!

I also saw Top Gun recently at the open air theatre. The crowd really got into it. I'd forgotten just how kitch it really was!

The 80's was a time when substandard began to be defined as average and "greed was good" - I think "American Psycho" and "Wall Street" are the ultimate postcard to the era

Thats not to say sentimental favourites like The Goonies, War Games and the birth of video games don't still give me a buzz....Blade Runner, Blue Velvet, Brazil, Once Upon a Time in America and Videodrome are proof there was also some quality cinema to be seen.

Get over the 80's man it was a crap decade in the crappy 20th century. I'm from the 24th century which is a way cooler century we fight giant bugs and have unisex showers. I kid you not times are good here you nostalgic little caveman.
