The Dark Crystal

Dark muppets
This was one of those awesome 80s kids movies that was dark and deep as hell for the intended age group. We're not talking highschool musical here folks, this was immersing stuff back in the day.
When I was a kid, I didn't know whether to be scarred or excited by this thing, either way I remember we watched it a stack of times.
The Skeksis were creepy as hell and back in the 80s and when my brother was skinny, they called him Skeksi..ha.
Then on the other side, we had those slow old dudes, the Mystics.
While these two mega-powers fight out the fate of the universe, we have the lone and innocent Gelfling's trying to save it all.
There was also the crazy old women called Aughra that always gave a good laugh because she could take her eye out and look at things, or roll it down a hall way and still see out of it.
I don’t know how Franz Oz went from the Muppets to this, but it was a great effort.
The studio apparently thought it was pretty dam dark and asked him to tame it down a bit for the next feature Labyrinth...but that’s for another post.
They have been working on a sequel to Dark Crystal for years now, entitled Power of the Dark Crystal. Recent reports have stated that it is now in pre-production and they’re looking at a release date for 2011.
“When single shines the triple sun, what was sundered and undone shall be whole, the two made one, by Gelfling hand, or else by none.”

I remember Dark Crystal well. There's a Disney film that I loved as a kid called Dark Couldron. I've seen it again recently with my little daughter and it's a lot darker than I remembered it to be.

All that stuff they made with just those puppets.
Its the kind of thing that will never happen again.
