Top 10 Tom Cruise films
March 22nd 2009 22:00
Cruisin'
The movie star and pin-up boy of the 80s. This was all before he lost his mind that is. The guy’s done a stack of films, so here is a decent list of movies (mainly focusing on the 80s of course) in no particular order...
TOM CRUISE FILMS
Top Gun – 1986
The movie that made him a household name. It broke box-office records and still holds the record for highest VHS sales ever, which it broke during pre-order! It drove up aviator glasses, bomber jackets and Navy enlistments. An American classic.
Rain Man – 1988
Cruise made the transition into serious cinema seamlessly with Rain Man (Rain Man post).
The Outsiders – 1983
This movie kick-started the careers of several actors, including; Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Diane Lane and of course our boy Tom.
Risky Business – 1983
If The Outsiders kick-started him, then Risky Business sent him to the big time. The ‘Old Time Rock n Roll’ scene is one of the most famous in cinema.
Jerry Maguire – 1996
Cameron Crowes great direction turned this into a cult classic favourite.
Born on the 4th of July – 1989
I remember when this came out and it was such a big deal and a real statement. I just watched this not long ago, and I have to say that it is actually still a really cool movie – check it out.
Cocktail – 1988
In truth, this probably isn’t one of the best movies ever made, but it is an 80s classic. Down to Kokomo, baby!...ah, where is Kokomo? Ironically, chances are, while you're reading this I am actually on my honeymoon in Vanuatu downing a few cocktails of my own...cheers!
Far and Away – 1992
This movie was sort of like Titanic on the frontier. Great little underrated film.
Days of Thunder – 1990
Cole Trickle! Cruise made this film himself. And how did he do it? He took everything that sold well on Top Gun and put it into racing cars. Genius.
Vanilla Sky – 2001
Another Crowe film. Plenty of people don’t dig this movie, but I thought it was adventurous and genius film making. Better the second time around.
Other notable mentions:
A Few Good Men, Interview with the Vampire, Mission: Impossible, The Last Samurai, Collateral, All the Right Moves, War of the Worlds, Magnolia, Tropic Thunder, The Firm

Were my favourites. I believe I still think they were damn good films, despite this fellows recent troppo behaviour.. he used to put in a good days work.

That said - Cruise certainly knows how to make a movie for its time.
Top Gun, Jerry Maguire even Risky Business and Rain Man and are bookmarks in social and cultural change - pity he's come apart at the stitching in public so often.
