Transformers: The Movie

More than meets the eye
Don't be fooled, we're talking Transformers — the animated movie. That's right...oldschool.
Obviously, we are in a day and age where the Transformers have undertaken a miraculous re-invention through a long-awaited comeback in Michael Bay’s films. While they aren't necessarily the deepest movies ever released, they do, in most part, hold very close to the original concepts.
I was lucky enough to be invited to the premiere of the latest edition at iMax not too long ago. While most appreciated seeing Megan Fox on a 30-meter screen, I didn’t exactly walk away with goosebumps. However, iMax was cool enough to be playing the awesome original ‘metal’ version of the opening tune from the oldschool movie in the lobby.
The memories came flooding back as I heard those chorused voices over those wicked 80s guitar licks. The band Lion did the opening tune for Transformers: The Movie back in 1986 and it still sounded as sweet to my ears in that lobby as it did back at that kids birthday party in school when I was first introduced to this animated masterpiece.
I was already a huge Transformers fan and although Bumblebee was being marketed as the number one bot in town, I was a Prime man through and through. Which is exactly why I was absolutely devastated when right before my eyes he was laid to rest by Megatron — who just happened to catch his own burial too. I already touched on this life changing moment on one of our first posts (Saturday Morning : 80's Cartoons post)
Either way, Bumblebee was mostly absent from the film for some strange reason. The producers took a precarious, but great risk in introducing Hot Rod (voiced by Judd Nelson!) as the new main player.
Other notable memories include the legendary twist where super-planet robot Unicron resurrected Megatron as Galvatron and Hot Rod taking on the matrix of leadership and being transformed into the new super-leader.
It was a classic old cartoon action movie and very Japanes-inspired and violent for its day. Also, it was actually set in 2005, so I must have missed that whole robot-war thing when it came past...
It also had the classic tune You’ve Got The Touch, which Dirk Diggler revived in Boogie Nights.
The classic title sequence. Part Star Wars, part Dr Who and part Heavy Metal. Awesome.
"I would have waited an eternity for this. It's over, Prime."

I was a die hard fan of TF and still am. Shout! Factory has re-released the first season of TF on DVD (not the Rhino version) recently. Brand new artwork as well was created for this release. It is a throw back to the original look that we grew up with.
