War of the Roses

All’s fair
War of the Roses was Danny DeVito’s own attempt at an 80s black comedy after his involvement in the great Ruthless People (Ruthless People post).
This time around he enlisted his screen counterparts from the Romancing the Stone/Jewel of the Nile films with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. It was a pretty big hit at the time, riding off the success of the trio’s last two films. Although it has kind of disappeared through the cracks of time, it's a fair observation to say that it was a little ahead of its time and more than a little daring.
The whole style of the movie is off-center and you can see a lot of detail has gone in. The whole thing is still a decent watch, but just seems to miss the mark a little. It has a big build up that not necessarily delivers.
The couple really start to go head-to-head and you kind of want it to go even further. It seemed a little one sided too, like you’re supposed to feel sorry for Kathleen Turner’s character, but you soon start to realise that she is a complete psycho considering he never cheated on her or anything, yet she nearly murders him on several hilarious occasions.
DeVito plays a more minor role by actually telling the story and throwing in a couple of his classic greasy dirt-bag lines in for good measure, which makes the ending all more impact-ful as he turns his life around and settles down. It's nothing to write home about, but is actually a cool little movie.
“Oliver, my father used to say that a man can never outdo a woman when it comes to love and revenge.”
